Hawaii Collection
Discovery Editions' Hawaii Collection begins with our Perfect Recreation™ of the first complete and accurate map of the Hawaiian Islands. It was created during Captain George Vancouver's 1790 — 1795 "Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and Round the World … Undertaken by His Majesty's [King George III] Command". This definitive 18th century map is accompanied by a richly detailed topographical elevation map drawn and engraved by William Alexander from sketches made on the spot by members of Vancouver's crew. Our Perfect Recreations™ of both maps accurately present every remarkable detail of these important and beautiful documents. Four decades later, Barthélemy Lauvergne painted this Vue de Honolulu, Iles Sandwich during Auguste-Nicolas Vaillant's Voyage de la Bonité. Our Hawaii Collection includes a number of truly gorgeous paintings of indigenous flora and fauna. Redouté's glowing 1810 Bromella ananas (Cultivated Pineapple) may be the most spectacular rendering of a fruit in the history of botanical art. And his sensuous Hibiscus heterophyllus is another example of why he is known as "the Raphael of flower painting". The c. 1830 Green Heron is an ornithological masterpiece from the master, John James Audubon. The very rare 18th century Japanese watercolor of the whale is a fascinating depiction of Japan's Symbol of Good Fortune and Prosperity. Franz Michael Regenfuss' famous illustrations of exotic seashells stimulated and reflected the great interest of 18th century Europeans in the arrival of elaborate specimens from increasingly distant locales. The stunning Bird of Paradise Flower watercolor by Jenny Phillips, the greatest living botanical artist, completes this wonderful collection of Perfect Recreations™. "These Discovery Editions prints are perfect". What The Experts Say
