Merian Collection

Our Maria Sibylla Merian Discoveries Collection offers a window into the 16th-and 17th-century Dutch phenomena of “tulipmania” and the concurrent fad for “cabinets of curiosities,” small but encyclopedic collections of all things rare and marvelous.

Merian's butterflies and moths were exotic creatures virtually unknown to Europeans when she painted them flitting amongst Surinam’s tropical flowers and fruits. These delicate and flamboyant works are masterpieces of the Art of Discovery; our Perfect Recreations™ of them let you bring home museum-quality art at an affordable price.

To celebrate Maria Sibylla Merian & Daughters: Women of Art and Science at the J. Paul Getty Museum, we're delighted to make these beautiful images even more affordable. Save $100 now on each Merian masterpiece: use the Coupon Code "Getty" when you buy.

"Absolutely perfect and magnificent". What Our Customers Say

"Flawlessly reproduced" ... "Gorgeous botanical prints in exquisite detail". What The Media Say

Merian’s innovative and fascinating combination of flowers with insects and sea shells was a reflection of her primary interest in insects. She left Holland in 1688 where the tulip, a recent arrival from Turkey, had become one of the most valuable commodities of trade. Arriving in Surinam (Dutch Guiana), she created her greatest work, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (1705).

Our Discovery Edition perfectly recreates eight of the most gorgeous Merian paintings: two vibrant original watercolors of tulips; and, six exotic flower, fruit and insect images from perfectly preserved engravings with original hand color.
