In 1513 Martin Waldseemüller, the man who named "America," produced this first detailed map of a portion of continental land in the New World. This work is an elegant and beautiful woodcut that will provide years of conversation, contemplation and enjoyment.

An important element of this map is the absence of the word "America"; instead, Columbus is credited with having discovered the land for the King of Castile. The mapmaker was probably correcting the mistake he had made in his landmark 1507 map: namely, the attribution of the discovery of the South American continent to Amerigo Vespucci. Surprisingly, this 1513 map depicts the Florida peninsula, the Gulf Coast and the Yucatan prior to their actual documented discovery.
