Novis Orbis Regionum World Map. A Perfect Recreation™ of the woodcut. By Oronce Finé. 1531. 16⅞" x 12"
This elegant and extraordinary 1531 woodcut map incorporated all the information gathered by Columbus, Cabot, Cortes and Magellan and was the definitive representation of the known world at the time of its publication. This is a fascinating and beautiful map that will provide years of conversation, contemplation and enjoyment. The map is presented in the double cordiform, or heart-like, projection that was adopted a few years later by Mercator for his landmark 1538 world map. Following the 1507 Waldseemuller map, the South American continent is named "America". At its tip, the southerly ocean passage is named, "Mare magellanicum", one of the earliest such references.
