Suillus: The great Hog-Fish. A Perfect Recreation™ of the copperplate engraving with original hand color. By Mark Catesby, c. 1731. 20” x 13”.

At the 1720 invitation of the Royal Society of London, Mark Catesby observed and painted the flora and fauna of the English colonies in America. Between 1727 and 1741, he engraved and hand colored 250 copies of his landmark work, The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands. He encountered a three-foot specimen of the Great Hog Fish in the Bahamas; his image and description of it may have been the first ever seen by Europeans.

"Absolutely perfect and magnificent".
