Seven Carolina Parrots, also known as Carolina Parakeets, are depicted feeding in a Common Cocklebur tree. Abundant during Audubon's time, they were extinct by 1905 due to loss of habitat and continuing slaughter by commercial hunters seeking the extravagant feathers and farmers protecting crops from voracious flocks. In 1831, Audubon wrote, "Our Parakeets are very rapidly diminishing number, and in some districts, where twenty-five years ago, they were plentiful, scarcely any are now to be seen."

The 435 paintings in Audubon's Birds of America constitute the most important achievement of ornithological art.

Audubon combined artistic and scientific talent to produce images that are as beautiful as they are important for their recording of carefully observed ornithological detail. King George IV of England, King Charles I of France, Daniel Webster and many important museums and institutions of higher learning were among the subscribers to this original publication.
