Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi. A Perfect Recreation™ of the copperplate engraving with original border hand color. By Guillaume Delisle. 1718. 25-1/2" x 19"

Guillaume Delisle's Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississipi presented the first complete and accurate picture of the Mississippi and Missouri river valleys. Published nearly a century before Lewis & Clark's journey west, this fascinating time machine is a unique window on the American West when England, France and Spain vied for control of the continent.

The map is the first to use the place name ‘Texas’ -- (Mission de los Teijas, establie en 1716) in present-day east Texas. It's also the first to use the place name ‘Chicago’ (Chicagou) and it's the most important map of North America in the first half of the 18th century.
