Maps of Mexico City and Gulf of Mexico. A Perfect Recreation™ of the woodcut. By Hernán Cortés. 1524. 19⅜" x 13"

In 1524 the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés produced this first map of an American city, Temixtitan or Tenochtitlán, now Mexico City -- and a map of the Gulf of Mexico that included the first use of the name "Florida". This work is a fascinating and beautiful woodcut map that will provide years of conversation, contemplation and enjoyment. It is an extraordinarily beautiful map that makes an extraordinary gift.

Cortés mapped two separate and distinct areas: the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico (with 'north' at the bottom); and, the capitol of the Aztec empire that is now Mexico City. The detailed representation of the city includes the major roadways and canals – and the pyramid temple and palace of the emperor Montezuma.
