In 1524 the Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés produced this first map of an American city, Temixtitan or Tenochtitlán, now Mexico City -- and a map of the Gulf of Mexico that included the first use of the name "Florida". Cortés mapped two separate and distinct areas: the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico (with 'north' at the bottom); and, the capitol of the Aztec empire that is now Mexico City.
