LeMoyne's patrons included King Charles IX of France and Sir Walter Raleigh. He was the first great botanical artist to draw and paint the flora of North America. This work is a part of his largest and earliest florilegia, an extraordinary and rare set of 80 watercolor masterpieces created during the early 1570s.
