A Topographical Chart of the Bay of Naraganasett. A Perfect Recreation™ of the engraving with original hand color. Surveyed by Charles Blaskowitz and published by William Faden, 1777. 25¼” x 36⅝”
In the years immediately preceding the American Revolution, Charles Blaskowitz, a British military surveyor, was responsible for charting the coastline of Rhode island to determine if the harbor at Newport could serve as a primary British naval base. Finely engraved contour lines and handpainted color show the hilly terrain surrounding the bay. Anticipating the War, the map shows the locations of forts, batteries, and principal farms throughout Rhode Island as well as Brown College in Providence. The plan of Newport, where the British fleet was based, is detailed; and, soundings and the hazards of Naragansett Bay are indicated. "Absolutely perfect and magnificent".
