This Nova Tabula Geographica complectens Borealiorem Americae Partem; in qua exacte delineatae sunt Canada sive Nova Francia, Nova Scotia, Nova Anglia, Novum Belgium, Pensylvania, Virginia, Carolina, et Terra Nova, cum Omnibus Littorum is a 1715 re-issue of the 1689 map of the northeast coast of America by Nicholas Visscher. Based on the original Jansson-Visscher map, this publication extended the area of coverage northward to include Lake Ontario and portions of Lakes Huron and Erie. The map is beautifully engraved to show topographical features including woodlands and mountains. Colonial settlements are shown to be confined to the seaboard and rivers. Interior areas are identified by the names of many Indian nations. Our Perfect Recreation™ of this rare beautiful map captures its every cartographic and illustrative detail.
About Nicholas Visscher
The Visscher family was the dominant force in map-making at the height of the Golden Age of Dutch cartography. They were known throughout Europe for their advanced geographic knowledge and for the artistic ornamentation of their works. They were one of the leading publishers in Amsterdam for nearly a century. Nicholas Visscher died in 1702, leaving the firm to his wife, Elizabeth, who continued the family business until 1726. Prior to and upon ceasing operations, she sold many of its engraved plates to Peter Schenk the Younger, who continued to re-issue them for many decades.
