A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California. A Perfect Recreation™ of the engraving with original hand color. Published by Samuel Augustus Mitchell, 1846. 20" x 22"
This beautiful map is a fascinating window on the way West before interstate highways or even the transcontinental railroad. In 1846 Samuel Augustus Mitchell published A New Map of Texas, Oregon and California, the most detailed and comprehensive map of its time. It accurately depicted all of the important emigrant trails including the "Oregon Route", Fremont's routes, the "Caravan Route to Santa Fe" and the "Great Spanish Trail". It was used by Brigham Young in 1847 en route to The Great Salt Lake.
This great map was the first to show Texas as a state -- a year before the war that made it one. Look very closely and rediscover the excitement of hundreds of mid-19th century discoveries. Explore the Sierras and the Tetons when hiking was the only way to get there.
